Landis+Gyr E470 smart meters: everything you need to know
21 June 2024 | Matt Mostyn
Smart meters are brilliant. They send readings to your energy supplier all on their own. They show you your energy use in real time. They tell you how much it’s costing in £ and p. They let you unlock exclusive offers and rewards. We could go on.
And while there are lots of ways smart meters make energy better, they can be a little confusing. And it’s not always easy to work out which type of smart meter you have in the first place.
So we’ve put together some helpful guides that tell you everything you need to know. In this one, we’ll cover the Landis+Gyr E470 – a smart meter that’s really common in the UK. Let’s start by finding out whether you’ve got one.
What is a Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter?
At the moment, there are 2 types of smart meter out there – SMETS1 or SMETS2. If yours is an SMETS1, that means it’s part of the first generation. SMETS2s are the second generation.
The Landis+Gyr (L+G) E470 is one of the most common smart meters in the UK. But figuring out whether yours is from the first or second generation can be tricky. That’s because the same model can apparently be either.
In fact, as many as 6 different L+G electricity and gas meters all share the same model number. And the newer SMETS2 versions look so similar to the older ones, it’s almost impossible to tell them apart. That’s where we come in.
What does the SMETS1 version look like?
Here’s an example of a first-generation Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter:
Luckily, there’s a big clue that tells you if your smart meter is from the first generation: there will be a separate “comms hub” next to it. In this example, that’s the little white box labelled Trilliant SEAP-2001-V. If you have one of these, your gas meter will also be an SMETS1.
For more info on SMETS1 and SMETS2 smart meters, and how to tell them apart, check our complete guide.
Can I switch energy supplier with an SMETS1 smart meter?
Yes, you can. A few years ago, SMETS1s would lose their smart features if you changed your energy supplier. But now they’ve all been upgraded remotely to work like an SMETS2. That means they’re compatible with all energy suppliers, so you can switch with peace of mind.
What does the SMETS2 version look like?
Here’s an example of a second-generation Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter:
Most SMETS2 smart meters look similar to the one above. But they might not have a supplier sticker, or a testing/demo reference. They can also vary in size, and the buttons might be in a different place – depending on your model.
If you’re not sure which type of smart meter you’ve got at home, the comms hub gives it away again. In an SMETS2, it’ll be fixed to the top of the smart meter, instead of next to it.
Check our complete guide for more ways to find out if your smart meter is an SMETS1 or SMETS2.
Will my SMETS2 Landis+Gyr E470 work with any energy supplier?
Yes – all second-generation smart meters should work with any energy supplier – even if you switch.
How to read your Landis+Gyr smart meter
Gone are the days of venturing into your meter cupboard to get your readings. Now your smart meter sends them for you. But there might be times when you’ll need to take a meter reading yourself, like if you’ve switched energy suppliers or if you want to keep a closer eye on your energy use.
Your Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter should show your reading on its display screen. But if you can't see it, press the A button a few times until “Total Act Import” comes up. Your reading should light up on the screen below this.
You might have to do things a little differently if you’re on an Economy 7 tariff, where you pay a standard price in the day and a lower rate overnight. But we cover that in our complete guide.
