Charge your home battery for less.
Get exclusive charging rates of 10p per kWh with our new tariff add-on trial, Battery Boost.
Meet Battery Boost. It lets you charge your solar battery at a lower rate of 10p per kWh1, when the grid’s at its greenest.2 And you can add it to any OVO tariff for free.
Be the first to get these exclusive trial rates
You could be one of the first to try Battery Boost and cut your electricity bills – all for free.
Our Battery Boost trial means your battery could save you money and cut carbon, even when it’s not storing energy from your solar panels. Our clever tech tops up your battery when the grid is using more renewable power. So you get greener electricity1 – better for you, your wallet and the planet.
Plus, we'll buy back any energy that you don't use at your usual SEG rate of up to 20p per kWh - that's twice what you paid for it.
This is a trial, so rates might change in the future. And we might ask you for feedback so we can improve things.

Sell back your unused power
Not using all the energy you’ve stored in your battery? We'll buy your unused power at your usual SEG rate of up to 20p per kWh.
How Battery Boost works
- All electricity you use will first be charged at your normal OVO electricity rates
- At the end of the month, we work out how much energy you’ve used to charge your battery
- We’ll then add credit to your energy account in the first 7 working days of the following month
- This means the cost of powering your battery reflects the 10p per kWh rate for Battery Boost
For example, let’s say your standard electricity rate is 28p per kWh. The Battery Boost rate is 10p per kWh. We’ll credit you 18p (the difference between the rates) for each kWh you’ve used to top up your battery. That means, if you’ve used 300kWh to charge your battery, you’ll get £54 in credit back in your energy account.
You can find out more about how we calculate your credit in our terms. This is a trial, so rates might change in the future. And we might ask you for feedback so we can improve things.

Questions and answers
Using our smart tech, we’ll control and optimise your battery for you. When grid demand is quiet and there’s more renewable power, we’ll charge your battery up so it’s ready for you to use.
All electricity you use will first be charged at your normal OVO electricity rates. At the end of each month, we’ll work out how much energy you’ve used to power your battery. We’ll then add credit to your energy account in the first 7 working days of the following month, so the cost of powering your battery reflects the 10p per kWh Battery Boost rate.
We add credit for Battery Boost to your account in the first 7 working days of each month. It’ll also show on your OVO bill as “Battery Boost Credit”.
Yes, if you’re on Battery Boost you’ll still be able to export electricity generated by your solar panels. You’ll get your normal SEG rate.
In summer, when the sun’s shining and the days are long, your solar panels will be generating lots of free energy, meaning your battery is likely to be full of charge already. This means, in winter, you’re more likely to need to top up your battery, because your solar panels are likely to make less electricity. So you’ll probably get more low-cost top-ups and see more Battery Boost credits on your bills in winter.
At the moment we're running a small trial with customers that have a solar battery from GivEnergy. But we plan to open Battery Boost to a wider range of solar batteries. When you register your interest, you can let us know which type of battery you have. We'll let you know when Battery Boost is available to add to your tarriff.

1 You'll pay our Battery Boost rate of 10p per kWh for any electricity used to top up your battery when OVO call on the battery to charge. If you override the controls and charge the battery from the grid, you'll be charged your standard electricity unit rate.
2 Our smart tech aims to charge your battery when the grid has more renewable energy in it, at periods of lower demand. Meaning it’s less likely your battery will be charged by energy from fossil fuels.
3 During the summer, your home and battery will be powered by your solar panels. During the winter and when the sun isn't shining, Battery Boost will continue to bring you cheaper electricity to keep your home running.
